So apparently if you change your last name, you'll never get a job.

For my Intro to Education class we have to go observe in three schools.  We sign up for observations online.  So I signed up for a couple of them with the name "Tanya Hansen," my legal name.  duh.

Anywho, I didn't change my name at TCC before the semester started because I didn't think it would be a big deal, since I hate TCC and plan on getting out of there ASAP.  I was also expecting some financial aid, and since I filled out my FAFSA as Williams, I thought it might be wise to keep my name that way for school stuff.  (I didn't get any financial aid, because TCC is the worst school ever and they won't give me the money I qualify for because I am poor, but that's another story...)

So anyway, my driver's license, social security card, and everything else say Hansen, and since my license says Hansen, my Leon County School badge also says Hansen.  Imagine that.  I mentioned to my professor about the name thing so he would have a heads up.  I even went a few weeks ago to TCC's enrollment services and officially changed my last name.  And they changed it.  So it makes it really weird when I get a call on a Sunday afternoon from the lady who is in charge of setting up the observations.  The observation sign-ups are open Monday at 5 to Wednesday at 10, and we were told that this woman is quick and gets all the info sent to the schools immediately.  So why, four days later, is she calling me about my name?  Because she just wanted to harp on me about changing my name.  She had already figured out that my name on the class roster was Williams.  She called to confirm it, and I told her how it was.  Then she proceeded to tell me how she is "philosophically opposed" to women changing their names.  Also, it causes so many problems down the road in finding a job, etc.  She even went on and on about how the schools look us up by our SSN, not by the name on the TCC roster.  Well, that's good, since my legal name is Hansen!!!  She just wanted to go on and on about it.  It's a little late for me to unchange it.

So anyway, I just thought this was the dumbest thing ever.  I'm philosophically opposed to my children not having the same last name as me.  As a woman, I have the right to change my name to whatever the heck I want, and I chose to change it!  And why would a professor call me on a Sunday?  It's just weird.  She's not even my professor.  I've never met the woman before.

Oh yeah, and after her ramblings, she was like, "well don't change your name again, just causes problems." What?!?!

Ok, that's my weird story from the weekend.  I sure hope the schools let me in with my badge that says "Tanya Hansen."  I'm so worried they might look up my SSN and see that my name is officially changed.  How horrible and submissive of me to change my name.

  1. It's good that you're coming to accept the fact that now you're unemployable and whatnot.

Seriously...I can't believe she called you just to tell you that. People need to back. off.
